Smoothleaf Elm
Ulmus minor
Tree (rarely shrub) up to 40 m tall. It creates abundant root suckers. Leaf blade slightly asymmetrical, does not overlap petiole. Fruits are achenes penny-shaped. Seed is located in the upper half of the wing. The edge of the wing is hairless.
Shoots: Shoots are thin, hairy in youth. Later with cork strips.
Natural range: Central, south-eastern and southern Europe, Asia Minor, the Caucasus; in our area domestic.
Buds
Buds are dark brown. The scales have white hairs on the margin or hairless.
Leaves
Leaves are simple, 5-10 cm long. The lamina is slightly asymmetric. The longer half of the lamina basis does not overlay the petiole. The face is glabrous and glossy. In the larger vein axils are on the underside fluffs of hairs. At least some of lateral veins are dichotomous before entering serrations. The petiole can be up to 15 mm long.
Fruits
Acheness penny-shaped. Seed is located in the upper half of the wing. The edge of the wing is hairless.
