Tree up to 15 m high with short stem and broad crown. The bark is in old age rough, strongly suberizated, deeply cracked. It may be up to 6 cm thick. Leaves are odd-pinnate, up to 35 cm long. Leaflets are acuminate with entire or serrulate margin. Leaflets are shortly hairy, shiny in early age. They are grayish, glabrous on the underside, may be slightly hairy on the veins. Stinky if rubbed. The flowers are green, arranged in hairy grapes. Flowering in May and June. The fruit is a black drupe, which, when crushed, smells like turpentine. They are 10-12 mm big and contain 5 egg-shaped seeds. Seeds are dark green or black. Shoots: Shoots are round, light brown. Older are covered by cork layer. The inner bark is shiny yellow.
