Tree 20-35 m tall, usually with large furcated spikes. Bark is smooth or stripping inslices, often covered with spikes. Alternate leaves, pinnate or bipinnate from 10 to 40 cm long. Leaflets are elongate-ovate pinnate, on the base diamond or round shaped, bluntly tipped on the top. The margin is crenate or serrate. The front leaf is dark green, the underside is lighter. The petiole is sparsely hairy. Racemose inflorescence contains yellow-greeen flowers. Flowering in June. The fruit is brown, flat, spinning legumes up to 45 cm long. It contains several seeds. The seed is widely eliptical, brown, smooth. Shoots: Shoots are thin, strongly twisted, shiny, hairless with 1 – 3- part spikes. Natural range: Eastern part of the US, in our area introduced.

Buds

Buds are hidden under spikes, surrounded by oval leaf scar. The lower buds are small, terminal bud is missing.
