Tree (less often shrub) 3-12 m tall. Bark is light gray, smooth, later stripping. The flowers are composed in panicle. Flowering in May and June. The fruit is pome, 4-9 mm. It is orange to scarlet red, shiny, without lenticels. Teardrop-shaped seeds are 4-5 mm, reddish. Shoots: Shoots are sparsely hairy, gradually glabrescent, reddish-brown, shiny, often silver-gray. Older shoots are black-grey, glabrous. Lateral branches are often gnarled. Natural range: Europe (outside southernmost part), Asia Minor; in our area domestic.

Buds

Buds are black-violet with white hair, egg-shaped. Terminal bud may be longer than 1 cm.

Leaves

Leaves are odd pinnate with reddish petiole. It has 5 to 9 pairs of leaflets usually. Leaves are lanceolata with asymmetrical basis. The margin is serrate or doubly serrate, in lower quarter entire. Whole leaf may be up to 20 cm long.

Fruits
