Evergreen Clematis

Clematis vitalba

The climber, 6-12 m long, stem lengthwise grooved, cracked. Shoots are hairy, the older glabrous. Buds are covered with only one scale, upright, small. Leaves odd pinnate, with 3-5 petiolate leaflets, on the reverse side of the main vein hairy, leaf margin entire. Climbing allowed by gyrate shoots. Blooms in June to September. Flowers are white to greenish-white. Fruit - ovoid achenes, hairy,with curved silky pinnate appendage. Appendage is up to 4 cm long, protruding hairy. Achenes constitute "fluffy", spherical fruits with a diameter of up to 10 cm. Shoots: Shoots are hairy, glabrous later; hexagonal on cross-section. Internodes are dull. Older wood is porous on the cross-section. Natural range: S Europe up to S Moravia; Asia Minor, the Caucasus; in our area domestic.

Buds

Buds have 1 scale. They are non-alternate, small, cone-shaped, densely white hairy. They are located under the twining petiole.

Leaves

Leaves are odd-pinnate with 3-5 petiolulate leaflets. Only the main vein on the underside is pilose. The lamina is entire, rarely denticulate. The petiole is 3-5 cm long, sparsely pilose, gyrate. The petioles on current year shoots do not drop of and allows the plant creeping.

Fruits
