Tree up to 20 m tall with bark stripping in linear stripes. Leaves odd pinnate, 20-25 cm long, consisting mostly of 5 leaflets. Leaflets ovoid with serrated edge and wedge-shaped basis. The biggest leaflet is the apical one. The fruit are fake drupes spheroidal or egg-shaped, in matureness almost black. Mature outer covering of nut is regularly cracking in 4 parts. Nuts are with 4 ribs. The covering is a very strong (6-12 mm thick), whitish, almost smooth, with 4 linear strips. Shoots: Shoots gently fleecy, older branches glabrous. Branch core is full. Natural range: North America; in our area introduced.

Buds are 12-25 mm long, wide-ovoid, brown with yellow hair.

Leaves are odd-pinnate, 20-25 cm long, consisting most frequently of 5 leaflets. Leaflets are obovate with serrated margin and wedge-shaped basis. The largest is the apical leaflet. On margins the leaflets are ciliate. The face side is glabrous, the underside is first pubestect, later hairless.
