Persian Walnut

Tree up to 20 m tall with silver-gray bark, which breaks up in very old age. Leaves are odd pinnate, up to 40 cm long, consisting of 7 to 9 leaflets. Leaves are eliptical, usualy no serrated. The biggest leaaflets is the apical one. The fruit are fake drupes (nuts), spheroidal to oval shape. They are smooth, glabrous and yellow dotted. Mature outer covering of nut is irregularly cracking and fall off. Covering with 2 significant strips. Shoots: Shoots glabrous, shiny, 8 to 10 mm thick. Branch core is brown-yellow, striped. Natural range: Western and Central Asia; in our area introduced.

Buds

Buds are spherical, black, hairy, most often with 4 scales. Terminal bud is bigger.

Leaves

Leaves are odd-pinnate, up to 40 cm long. They consist of 7 to 9 leaflets Leaflets are elliptic, usually entire or irregularly dentate. At the basis they are widely cuneate or rounded, asymmetric. The largest is the terminal leaflet. From the face side the leaflets are glabrous, glossy; from the underside also glabrous, with the exception of the vein axils, where are fluffs of hairs. Leaves are aromatic.
