Tree up to 25 m tall with rough bark in older age. Leaves are odd pinnate, up to 50 cm long, consisting of 15 to 19 leaflets. Leaf lancet to ovoid with oblong top and serrate edge. The biggest leaflets are in the middle of the leaf. The fruit are fake drupes (nuts) spheroidal shape. They are thinly hairy to hairless. During maturing changing colour to black. Mature outer covering of nut is not cracking. Nuts are spherical, with strong covering with deep gaps. Shoots: Shoots diameter up to 5 mm, hairy, later hairless. Branch core is brown-yellow, striped. Natural range: North America; in our area introduced.

Buds

Buds are gray with thick hair (slimer than Juglans regia). Terminal bud is bigger.

Leaves

Leaves are odd-pinnate. They are up to 50cm long and consist of 15-19 leaflets. Leaflets are lanceolate or egg-shaped with elongated tip and with a serrated margin. At the base they are rounded, often asymmetric. The largest leaflets are in the middle of the leaf. On the face side they are primarily tomentose, later hairs disapear. The underside is all over its area scatterelly hairy; veins are densely pilose. Petiole is covered by first red, later grey hairs.
