Downy Birch

Tree up to 20 m tall, branches not overhanging. The bark dimly white to chalk white. Bark splitting transversally, not very deep. Leaf blade is the widest around the middle of the leaf, top with short spike. Petiole and other side of the leaf at least near veins hairy. The fruits are achenes with 2 see-through edges. The edge is 1, 5x larger than seed. Support scales are trilobate, the side lobes are heading aside. Shoots: Shoots not overhanging, pointing up, hairy, sometimes with lenticels. Natural range: Eurasia, in the east the border is the river Lena; in our area domestic.

Buds

Buds ovoid, slightly sticky.

Leaves

The lamina is ovate, widest approximately in the middle, with shortly pointed tip. The margin is unevenly twice serrated. The basis is widely cuneate, rounded or even slightly cordate. The underside is pilose is at least on veins. The petiole is shorter than a half of the lamina and it is scatteredly pilose.

Fruits

The fruit are achenes with 2 see-through edges. The edge is 1, 5x larger than seed. Support scales are trilobate, the side lobes are heading aside.
