European Weeping Birch

Tree up to 25 m tall with overhanging branches. The bark is grayish-white, bark slipping transversaly,at the old age in the lower part of the stem deeply irregularly split, dark. Leaf blade triangular, the widest in the lower third of the leaf, top spiky. Fruits are small achenes with 2 see-through edges. They are located in overhanging amments. The edge of achene is 2x wider than seed. Support scales are trilobate, side lobes are wider and pointing down. Shoots: Shoots thin, often overhanging, hairless, with waxy lenticels. Natural range: Eurasia to the Arctic Circle, in the east the river Lena; in our area domestic.

Buds ovoid, spiky, bright and sticky.

Leaves

Leaves are simple. The lamina is triangular ovate to rhombic, widest in the lower third. The tip is pointedly elonged. The margin is twice serrated. The basis is widely cuneate to truncated. The underface is grayish, in youth scatteredly pilose, soon becoming glabrous. The petiole is half as long as the lamina.
