Saucer Magnolia
Magnolia × soulangeana
Big, sparsely branched bush (rarely a tree) up to 5 m tall with gray, smooth bark. Twigs reddish-brown, green pubescent, later gradually glabrescent. Buds are covered with2 scales, are densely pubescent, terminal bud is the largest. Leaf blade up to 20 cm long, obovate, leathery. Flowers before foliage (April to May). Flowers upright, cup-shaped, 10 cm long, white to dark red.
Shoots: Shoots reddish-brown, green pubescent, later gradually glabrescent.
Natural range: Planted in parks.
Buds
Buds have 2 scales. The terminal reproductive bud is up to 4 cm long, beak shaped with dense green hairs. Axillary buds are smaller.
Leaves
Leaves are simple. The lamina is skinny, up to 20 cm long, obovate, at the basis cuneate, the tip is slightly pointed. The face is dark green, sparsely pilose. The underside is lighter, pilose. The leaf margin is entire.
Fruits
Folicles in upright aggregate fruitsaggregate fruits. They are sometimes pink to red, often with white dots. Seeds are crimson red, shiny and if ripe hanging on thin long strings.
