Northern Red Oak
Quercus rubra
Tree 25 - 30 m tall with smooth, later shallow crazed bark. Buds at the end of the shoot, ovoid, spiky. buds scales dark red, at the top hairy, on the edge also hairy, shiny. Leaf blade with long petiole, lobed, Lobes (7-9 ) dentate. Face hairless, other side later with hair near veins. The fruit are achenes - acorns. The shape is spheroidal to ovoid with flat basis, the top elongated to a sharp spike.The cup is flat.
Shoots: Shoots with distinguish ribs, reddish-brown, the older with gray hair, shiny.
Natural range: Eeastern part of the North America, in our area introduced.
Buds
Buds are located by the top of the shoot. They are ovate, pointed. The scales are dark red, hairy on the top and on the margin, shiny.
Leaves
Leaves are simple. The lamina is long petiolated, lobated. The lobes usually occur in the number of 7-9 and they are terminated with barbate dents. Incisions of the lobes reach to 1/3 – 1/2 of the lamina. The face is glarous, the underside in maturity is pilose in the vein axils.
Fruits
The fruit are achenes - acorns. The shape is spheroidal to ovoid with flat basis, the top elongated to a sharp spike.The cup is flat.
