Sessile Oak
Quercus petraea
Tree 20 - 30 m tall with a wide concluded crown. Shoots are strong and hairless. Leaf blade more regularly lobed, solid. Petiole 12 - 30 mm long (longer than Q. robur). The fruit are achenes - acorns. Achene has thin wall, scales folded or with tips, flat or slightly domed. Acorns are ovoid, located in cup from 1/3.
Shoots: Shoots are thick and glabrous.
Natural range: Europe (to 61° N, in the east the Dniester), Asia (Caucasus); in our area domestic.
Buds
Buds are located by the top of the shoot. They are ovate. Compared to the Q. robur, they are more pointed, thinner and longer. The scales are mat yellowish-brown, hairy on the margin.
Leaves
Leaves are simple. The lamina is less variable, the upper part is widely rounded, more regularly pinnatilobate; rigid. The basis is cuneate, rarely can be rounded. Lobes usually are regular. The face is glabrous, can be slightly glossy; the underside usually is covered by fine hairs with 2-3 branches. The petiole is longer (up to 3 cm), glabrous.
Fruits
The fruit are achenes - acorns. They are located near leaves; usually there are 3. There are sedentary, rarely on peduncles up to 1,5 cm long. Achene has thin wall, scales folded or with tips, flat or slightly domed. Acorns are ovoid, located in cup from 1/3.
