Tree 20 - 30 m tall. Shoots stronger, angular (older round), brownish. Leaf-scars greater, semi-circular on distinct leaf pads. Leaf blade 9 - 20 cm long, oblong, pointed, leathery. Margin spiny-serrate. Fruits are 1-3 loaved achenes, so-called chestnuts. They are dark brown, shiny, located in spiny achene. Fruit usually breaks through 4 flaps. Shoots: Shoots are thick, angular (later round), brownish. The leaf scarves are big, semi-circular, on visible leaf pads. Natural range: Southern Europe, Asia Minor, the Caucasus, in our area introduced.

Buds

Buds are covered by 2 scales. They are singular, glabrous, shiny and ovate. The terminal bud is the biggest.

Fruits

1-3 loaved achenes, so-called chestnuts. They are dark brown, shiny, located in spiny achene. Fruit usually breaks through 4 flaps.
