Small tree up to 15 m high with wide crown and short stem. The bark is splitted. Leaves are simple. The lamina is entire, up to 50 cm long (and of same width) on long shoots. Usually is composed of 3 to 5 lobs. Leaves on flower shoots are smaller without lobs. The margin is serrate. The leaf is densely hairy in early age, hairy later. The petiole is up to 40 cm long. The flowers are aranged in racemes. They are 5 petals in flower, flower is fragrant, inside with dark dots and yellow strips, outside the violet. Flowering in April and May. The fruits are ovoid capsules up to 3 cm long. Seeds with wing. Shoots: Shoots are thick, softly hairy, with big leaf-scars. The core is stripped (later entire). Natural range: East Asia, central China; in our area introduced.

Buds

Buds are opposite, small, ovoid. They are usually 2 – one above another. The scales are reddish brown. Flower buds are spherical, up to 1 cm big.
