Wych Elm

Ulmus glabra
Ulmaceae

Tree 10 - 40 m tall. Already near above the ground, stem usually branches into several strong, often twisted branches. Bark is also on older trees remarkably smooth. Leaf blade slightly asymmetrical. In the upper edge of the margin pointed lateral lobes may occur. Fruits are achenes of a penny-like shape. Seed is in the middle of the wing, hairless. Fruit is approximately 2 cm long. Even before bud breaking fruits are developed. Shoots: Shoots are thick and hairy. Natural range: Central, Northern and Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, the Caucasus; in our area domestic.

Buds

Buds are dark brown with shiny red hairs.

Leaves

Leaves are simple. The lamina is slightly asymmetric; 9-15 cm long. The face is roughly shortly pilose. The longer half of the lamina basis often overlays the petiole. In the upper part of the lamina pointed lateral lobes can be evolved (their presence is a significant determination sign). The leaf tip usually is long, thin; seems as it was mounted. At least some of lateral veins are dichotomous before entering serrations. Petioles are shorter, usually up to 4 mm long.

Fruits

Achenes of a penny-like shape. Seed is in the middle of the wing. Edge of achenes is hairless. Fruit is approximately 2 cm long. Wing is broad, in front with a shallow trim. Even before bud breaking fruits are developed.
